In a Nutshell
You don’t need to “get fit” before starting CrossFit. CrossFit is the method you use to get fit, not a test you take after you already are. At Spark CrossFit in East Perth, every single workout is scaled to match your current baseline: whether you’re a complete beginner, returning after years off, or prepping for functional hybrid events like HYROX.

If I had a dollar for every time someone in East Perth told me, “Matt, I want to try CrossFit, but I just need to get in shape first,” I’d probably be retired on a beach at Rottnest by now.
I completely understand where the feeling comes from though.
When most people think of CrossFit, they picture ultra-fit athletes throwing heavy barbells around or doing crazy gymnastics tricks. Maybe you’ve walked down Wellington Street or strolled near Royal Street, peered through a gym window, seen people sweating through a workout, and thought: “Yeah, there’s no way. I’d embarrass myself.” If that’s the case, let’s address the elephant in the room straight away.

The “Get fit first” myth
Saying you need to get fit before starting CrossFit is like saying you need to clean your house before hiring a house cleaner. It misses the entire point of why we exist!
You don’t get fit to do CrossFit. You do CrossFit to get fit.
When people say they want to get fit first, they usually mean they plan to go on a few long jogs around the Swan River or do some random dumbbell workouts at home until they feel “ready.” But here’s what usually happens:
- It’s boring: exercising alone without guidance gets repetitive fast.
- It lacks structure: without a clear plan, it’s hard to know if you’re making actual progress.
- It stalls momentum: waiting for the “perfect moment” to feel fit enough usually means months pass without taking action.
What “Day one” actually looks like at Spark CrossFit
If you walked into Spark CrossFit tomorrow, we wouldn’t throw you into the deep end. We don’t hand you a giant barbell and tell you to jump into a high-intensity routine on your first visit.
Here is what actually happens:
- We start with where you are today: whether you haven’t worked out in five years or you’re already fairly active, your workout is scaled to your current baseline.
- Movement comes before weight: if a workout calls for a heavy squat, a beginner might do bodyweight squats to a bench. If a workout calls for pull-ups, we may use resistance bands or do ring rows instead.
- You control the pace: intensity is relative. What feels like a 10/10 effort for an advanced athlete might look completely different from your or mine 10/10 effort, and that is 100% fine.
We coach people from all walks of life. We have complete beginners who were nervous just walking through the front door, right alongside locals preparing for functional hybrid events like HYROX. Everyone works side-by-side, doing the exact same workout scaled to their specific strength, capacity and mobility.

Nobody is looking at you (In a good way!)
One of the biggest fears beginners have is being judged.
Here’s a small secret about the community at Spark CrossFit: everyone is too busy trying to get through their own workout to worry about what weight is on your bar.
The person next to you pushing hard isn’t thinking about your fitness level when they look at you: they’re remembering what it felt like when they started out too. That’s why the loudest cheers in our gym are almost always reserved for the person finishing last, not the person finishing first.
