In a nutshell
CrossFit jargon can sound like a foreign language, but “scaling” simply means modifying workouts so you move well, train safely, and build long-term fitness. Instead of chasing a quick heart-rate burn or racing a timer, Coach Matt and the Spark CrossFit team focus on moving well first to build a body that stays strong and functional for the next 20+ years.
If you’ve ever looked at a CrossFit website and felt like you were reading code, with terms like “WOD,” “RX,” “AMRAP,” or “Scaling,” you are definitely not alone.
CrossFit has a language of its own. But strip away the acronyms, and the core philosophy is remarkably simple: we teach your body to move safely, efficiently, and effectively.
Let’s break down what a “WOD” actually is, why “scaling” is our favorite word at Spark CrossFit, and why our approach to coaching is built for the long haul.

First off: What on earth is a WOD?
“WOD” simply stands for Workout of the Day. Every day at Spark CrossFit, we run a structured 60-minute class centered around a different main workout. Every class is fully coach-led: we warm up together, break down the technique step-by-step, adjust the movements for each person, run the workout, and cool down.
No guessing what to do. No wandering around staring at gym machines. You just turn up, and we guide you through every rep.

The 20-year mindset vs. quick-fix group HIIT
Many popular group fitness classes (like standard cardio circuits, BFT, Fit Stop or F45) are designed around one main goal: making you sweat as hard as possible while racing a clock or a screen timer. While throwing yourself around for 45 minutes certainly burns calories, high-speed movement without hands-on coaching often comes at the expense of good form.
At Spark CrossFit, we train real humans with a 20-year mindset.
We don’t just ask, “How hard can we push you today?” We ask, “Is how you’re moving today going to keep your joints healthy, your core strong, and your body capable 20 years from now?”
That means we prioritize moving well first. Speed and intensity only come after the mechanics are rock solid.
What scaling looks like in action (the push-up example)
In CrossFit, “scaling” isn’t a downgrade or a consolation prize: it’s intelligent customization. Every single movement in our gym can be adapted to match your exact strength, flexibility, or injury history.
Take a standard push-up. Most traditional fitness classes tell beginners to drop to their knees. The problem? Knee push-ups don’t teach your core how to stay braced in a rigid plank position. More variance is needed in order to progress towards the RX version of the push-up.
Here is how we can scale a push-up at Spark CrossFit so you build real strength from the ground up:
- The AbMat option: We place a firm AbMat cushion on the floor under your chest. This slightly reduces the range of motion you need to lower yourself while letting you keep perfect plank form.
- The band-assisted push-up: We loop a soft resistance band across a squat rig and position it under your chest. As you lower down, the band catches your weight and gives you just enough spring to push back up from the floor. You perform the exact full-body movement pattern with full support.
Both options build real upper-body and core strength safely, without wrecking your shoulders or forcing sloppy habits.

You don’t have to figure it out alone
If you have a sore shoulder, tight hips, or haven’t done a push-up since high school, that’s not a barrier. It’s just our starting point. Our job as coaches is to look at the workout on the board and instantly tailor it to where you are today.
Whether you’re an East Perth local stepping into a gym for the first time or making the jump from generic group HIIT classes to structured functional fitness, we’ll make sure you walk out feeling accomplished, not beaten up.
